Stem cells are not specialized cells although they have the remarkable ability to become different types of cells — such as a brain cell, or a muscle cell, or a red blood cell — which form during the body’s growth and development.
Stem cells are considered as the body’s raw materials. When infused to tissues or organs, these cells also have the ability to repair the damage. So they are now being used for treating certain diseases or ailments in many medical scenarios.
What is stem cell therapy?
Stem cell treatment in Colombia makes use of the patient’s own stem cells, or stem cells from qualified donors, in treating medical conditions. In theory, there is no limit to the diseases and ailments that can be treated through the use of stem cells.
The most common means of harvesting stem cells in stem cell therapy, Colombia is through a bone marrow transplant, also known as Hematopoietic Stem Cell. However, there are also other therapies taken from other stem cell sources, such as umbilical cord blood, which are still being carefully studied by the experts.
Some of the diseases treated in our clinic in Colombia include the following:
- Leukemia and some types of blood cancers
- Bone marrow failure and Myelofibrosis
- Red cell or platelet abnormalities
- Severe Combined Immune Deficiency (SCID) and other immune disorders
- Metabolic disorders
- Some musculoskeletal diseases
Stem Cell Treatment Abroad
Since the rise of stem cell therapy, stem cell clinics are becoming more common, especially in the United States. A study has revealed that nearly 600 stem cell clinics were operating domestically in 2016.
Although the large number of clinics available in the U.S. gives patients the option of never having to travel outside the , stem cell treatment abroad has grown in popularity for the past couple of years. Stem cell tourism refers to traveling to other countries to get stem cell treatment. A study published in CellR4 has revealed that many patients opt to get stem cell therapy abroad because they can have better access to treatments that are unavailable in the United States because of political controversies and what’s more, less expensive.
Getting treated in countries that offer affordable and high-quality stem cell therapy like Colombia is a great option for patients who look for better alternatives. Here are several reasons why treatment abroad could be right for you:
- Stem cell treatment abroad is more affordable without compromising the quality of medical treatment.
- Our stem cell clinic in Colombia offers treatments that may not be available in the U.S.
- Our clinic has complete equipment and facility with a validated success rate.
- Stem cell treatment in Colombia is performed by experienced, board-certified doctors.
Remember, however, that undergoing stem cell treatment abroad requires due diligence from the patient or the patient’s relatives or carer. As with any type of medical case, a diagnosis and a series of consultation must be properly undertaken with our doctors to help the patient understand the disease, the nature of the treatment and the entire spectrum of the medical care associated with it.
A Brief History of Stem Cell Therapy
The discovery of stem cells treatment didn’t happen by chance. Since the 1960s, scientists have been studying a way to derive stem cells from human embryos to be able to help in vitro fertilization procedures.
In 1981, experts were able to isolate and culture embryonic stem cells from mice. What followed was a way for the experts to alter and delete mice genes to understand its pathology better.
By 2006, experts achieved another breakthrough where specialized cells were genetically reprogrammed and modified into pluripotent stem cells or immature cells that can turn into any type of cell in the body.
The Boom of Stem Cell Treatment
Since then, stem cell therapy has become a booming industry that has brought regenerative medicine to the front and center. At first, it was primarily a significant treatment for blood conditions but it has now expanded to other fields.
Today, these therapies are being used to treat musculoskeletal, degenerative, and inflammatory diseases. It is also used for treating traumatic brain injury, stroke, and heart conditions. It’s also very helpful for treating vision impairment and the healing of wounds for those with scar tissues and collagen structure problems.
How stem cells are obtained?
There are two ways to harvest stem cells. The first and most common is the bone marrow harvest (transplant), where the stem cells are collected from the bone marrow spaces in the pelvic bones. This procedure requires surgery and once the stem cells are collected, they will be given back to the patient or donated to another person in need, provided that they’ve been matched by the doctors.
The other way is via a peripheral blood stem cell collection, which doesn’t need surgery. However, it may take a few more steps than the most common process. The patient will be injected with medication for at least five preceding days to promote healthy stem cell growth. On collection day, the patient’s blood will be drawn using a piece of special equipment similarly used in blood donations. This process may take up to eight hours to complete.
In both cases, a recovery period is needed. The patient and the donor, if there is one, has to rest and recuperate for at least two days, and possibly up to several weeks, depending on the patient’s health and healing capacity.
Why is stem cell therapy safe and effective?
In most stem cell therapies, stem cells are sourced from the patients themselves. If there is a donor, then he or she must be matched with the patient to qualify. This minimizes any risks of the body rejecting the stem cell.
Stem cell therapy risks, however, can increase if the stem cell used is cultured (grown in the lab) or mixed with other chemicals.
A study from the Petersen Project has shown that stem cell therapy abroad delivered positive substantial outcome for some patients who can now move their hands with more flexibility or see an improvement in their body’s spasticity.
In fact, around the world, scientists and experts are studying the potential of stem cells to deliver medical breakthroughs that will cure more diseases one day.
